The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the world’s largest motorcycle gathering, takes place annually in Sturgis and Sturgis, South Dakota, during the first week of August for 10 days. Established in 1938 by local Indian dealer Pappy Hoel, the rally has evolved with private businesses hosting events like races, concerts, and rides. The 2024 event will be the 84th annual rally, held from August 2nd to August 11th. Beyond racing and hill climbing, attendees can enjoy scenic rides to landmarks as well as numerous wild west and Black Hills history museums.

1. Devils Tower

This ride offers a scenic journey to Wyoming’s iconic Devil’s Tower, famous for its unique monolithic structure. Depart from Pappy Hoel Campground and travel through Alzada, MT, to reach Devils Tower National Monument. The route features sweeping curves and scenic stops, making it a favorite among riders. After visiting the monument, return via Hulett, WY, and enjoy a ride through the northern Black Hills, passing through Lead and Deadwood before concluding your loop back in Sturgis via Boulder Canyon.

Departing from Sturgis, your journey will take you to Bear Butte, a sacred site for Native Americans. Then, head south through Badlands National Park, where the unique landscape might make you feel like you’ve arrived on another planet.

Renowned for its 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, and 3 tunnels framing Mount Rushmore, this route offers a challenging and scenic Black Hills riding experience. Starting from Sturgis, the loop heads south to Mount Rushmore and continues through the hills into Wyoming. There, you’ll visit Sundance and Beulah, known for hosting the largest biker pig roast. Conclude the day by returning through the northern Black Hills to Sturgis. Don’t forget your camera!

4. Spearfish Canyon

Departing from Sturgis, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through Boulder Canyon to Deadwood, SD. After exploring the Wild West, continue through Lead towards Spearfish Canyon. Make sure to stop for lunch at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge in Savoy. From Spearfish, head north to Belle Fourche, known for the Black Hills Roundup Rodeo. On the return to Sturgis, you’ll pass through the pristine northern hills around St. Onge.

This ride is renowned for its dramatic granite spires and narrow tunnels, showcasing the Black Hills’ unique geological features. Departing from Sturgis, you’ll traverse the eastern Black Hills via the Needles Highway, passing through Custer State Park for breathtaking views. The route also includes a visit to Wind Cave National Park and a stop at the famous, still-in-progress Crazy Horse sculpture. With its tight curves and stunning vistas, this ride is a must-see.
